A novel concept for exposing the history of New York City's Washingon Square Park exploiting the ubiquitous nature of radio.
New York City is steeped in history, a history that is sometimes
unknown or forgotten. Washington Square Park is a common meeting
ground known for it's proximity to many downtown destinations. Because
of this, it has enjoyed a storied history; from a pauper's grave
to a marching ground to a public execution field. Most people are
not aware of this rich history, and the purpose for this project
was to expose the hidden history in the most accesibile way - using
the radio.
Embedding eight small radio transmitters
throughout the park, eight distinct histories are broadcast on
the same frequency. Anyone walking through the park tuned to
88.3 on a standard radio would hear the sound piece incorporating historical re-creations, facts and environmental sound associated with that region of the park.
